It can be difficult to encourage your child to love reading when they struggle with it. Reading is an activity that a person will do their entire life, so it’s best to create a love of reading early on. If your child is facing difficulties with building reading skills, it’s best to help them as much as possible as soon as possible. If you notice your child is displaying a hatred of reading, try to work through it with them to figure out what exactly is going on and why they have developed a dislike of reading. Generally, the reason for a strong dislike of reading is because they haven’t developed the proper skills. When you are raising kids there’s a certain process to help them love reading and it starts with you being a good role model and displaying your own love of reading. Three Tips To Encourage Your Child To Love Reading

We put together three tips to help encourage your child to develop a love of reading. It can be difficult for a child who has learning difficulties to begin to love reading, but when you take the time to show them that reading is enjoyable it will change your child’s perspective. Take the time to show your child that reading is fun and you’ll watch as their attitude changes before your eyes.

Start Small

The first step for anything involving children is to start small. Start by taking them to the library, story time, and read to them at night. When you begin to show your child that reading is something to enjoy instead of something to fear they’ll begin to see how great reading can be. The first step you should take is begin taking them to the library on the weekends or after school. You can either take them to story times where someone reads to your child or you can take them to the library and give them the opportunity to pick out a few books to take home. If you don’t have the time or energy to take your child to the library you can also begin reading to them at night. Reading to your child every day before night will be a great way to relax from a long day, snuggle under the blankets, and get lost in an adventure.

Hook Them In

The best way to get your child involved in reading is by hooking them on it. No one can resist a good story whether you’re telling it orally or reading from a book. When you hook your child on a good story they’ll begin to see the beauty of reading. The best way to start hooking them on a story is by reeling them in with a good hook. Most children’s stories are a great way to hook your child on reading because of pictures, the story is short and to the point, and the story is filled with curiosity and adventure. Figure out what your child likes and then begin to find stories that are able to pique their interest. Is your child into adventure stories? Does your child enjoy animals? Does your child enjoy counting? Learn what your child likes and then go from there. You can either read a few chapters out loud and pique their interest or pick up a picture book without words and make up a story together. As your child begins to enjoy hearing a story, he or she will want to read more.

Keep It Fun

When you do any activity with children make sure to keep it fun. Make going to the library fun when you show your child they can meet other kids and make friends. Make reading a story at night fun by reading together or taking turns reading every other page. You can also make it fun by making up stories together. Whichever way you decide to introduce your child to reading, make sure to keep it light and fun. Don’t get frustrated if they can’t pronounce words and don’t lose your patience.
